First Academic Dismissal
What happens if I am placed on 1st Academic Dismissal?
The Academic Standards policy at Northwest Vista College states that students who are placed on Academic Dismissal must sit out one (1) full sixteen (16) week semester before they are considered eligible to return. After the sit-out period, students are required to complete the petition process to be considered eligible for registration. Petitions are reviewed with an academic advisor by appointment only. No summer petitions are accepted at Northwest Vista College.
Note: Students who wish to enroll and not remain out a full fall or spring semester may submit a completed dismissal petition to be considered for an exception to the sit-out period. Students who complete the petition process and are granted the exception to the required sit-out period are able to enroll in classes with the understanding that they must comply with all requirements indicated on the Contract for Students on Academic Dismissal.
Petitioning does not guarantee approval of enrollment. It is at the discretion of the academic advisor to determine if it is the student's best interest to enroll or sit out the 16-week requirement as stated in the policy.
I have been notified that I am on 1st Academic Dismissal. What steps must I take?
All students on 1st Academic Dismissal will have to complete the petition for waiver of Academic Dismissal process. Prior to initiating the petition process, you must ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements listed below.
What are the eligibility requirements for petitioning to return from 1st Academic Dismissal?
Please view our Academic Dismissal Petition Process Page.
If you are not sure which level of dismissal you are on, you may send an email request to the Academic Standards team to have your record reviewed at nvc-ast@xgcr.net. Please include your full name and banner ID in the message.
Where do I obtain a Dismissal Packet?
Please review the Academic Dismissal Checklist for information to help you prepare for the petition process.
Academic Dismissal packets will be available through the PASS Canvas course (steps 3 and 4). Dismissal packets must be completed in full as directed in order to be considered. Acceptable file formats are PDF and Word. No other file formats are able to be viewed- this includes One Note and Google Docs. Students who submit incomplete packets or have not completed all eligibility requirements listed above will not have a Dismissal Interview scheduled until all requirements have been met, potentially resulting in the inability to enroll in the desired semester. If you have any questions about how to fill out any parts of the petition packet, you may contact the Academic Standards team by email at nvc-ast@xgcr.net.
What are my responsibilities as a student on a 1st Academic Dismissal at Northwest Vista College?
If your petition is approved, you will be expected to meet the following requirements:
- Actively attend and participate in all enrolled classes, including the mandatory Strategies for Success (SDEV0171) course
- Complete all courses (including the SDEV0171 course) with a "C" or higher

- Visit with your assigned academic advisor at least once during the petitioning semester, preferably prior to the start of registration for the upcoming semester.
- Utilize the recommended support services and success strategies discussed during your advising interview

- Continually earn a semester GPA of 2.0 or above until in good standing (cumulative institution GPA of 2.0) is reached in order to remain enrolled.
- Continuously meet with your assigned advisor each semester until in good standing
- Comply with all contractual requirements discussed during dismissal interview.
Students whose petitions are approved and do not comply with all the responsibilities outlined above may result in the student having to sit out a full 16-week semester, and must re-petition after the sit-out period. Not earning a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher will automatically place you on the next level of dismissal.
There is no option to petition the sit-out requirement once a student is placed on 2nd Academic Dismissal
When will I be back in Good Academic Standing?
Students are placed back in Good Academic Standing when both their overall institutional and semester GPA's are a 2.0 or higher. Once a student is back in Good Academic Standing their registration hold will be expired and their enrollment hours will be restored to full time. Dismissal students may be required to complete an exit interview survey which is provided by email.
